Common Axial-Piston Main Pump Failure Modes
Most axial-piston main pump failures result from gradual wear and contamination rather than catastrophic failure:
Internal Leakage: Wear of cylinder block, port plate, or pistons causing flow and pressure drop - results in sluggish, weak, or jerky machine movement
Oil Contamination: The primary cause of failure - leads to scoring or seizure of pistons, swashplate, and port plate; often due to neglected filter maintenance and poor oil quality management
Air Ingress/Suction Leaks: Causes loud noise, cavitation, and milky oil appearance
Aged Seals: Worn shaft seals and O-rings result in external leakage
Worn Bearings: Produces abnormal noise and shaft play
Control Mechanism Failure: Malfunction of variable-displacement mechanism or PC (power/torque) control valve prevents pressure buildup and causes abnormal displacement - many "dead pumps" actually suffer from this issue
